Pienza, the ideal city of the Renaissance

Pienza is a charming Tuscan village located in the heart of the Val d'Orcia, in the province of Siena. It is famous for being one of the rare examples of an ideal Renaissance city, designed in the 15th century by order of Pope Pius II, who was born here when the town was still called Corsignano.

Origins: Transformed from a small medieval village into an ideal city in 1459, thanks to architect Bernardo Rossellino commissioned by Pius II.

UNESCO World Heritage Site: The historic center was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996 for its beauty and architectural harmony.

Location: Perched on a hill at 491 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking views of the Val d'Orcia.

Pecorino di Pienza: renowned local cheese, protagonist of the "Fiera del Cacio" (Cheese Fair) and the traditional "Cacio al fuso" (Fused Cheese) game.
