Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta: an icon of the Val d'Orcia

The Vitaleta Chapel is one of the most famous images of Tuscany, nestled in the rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia, between Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia. Small, solitary, and surrounded by cypress trees, it has become a symbol of spirituality and scenic beauty.

🏛️ History and Architecture
Origins: The current chapel dates back to 1884, rebuilt on an ancient votive sanctuary by Giuseppe Partini, a Sienese architect inspired by the Renaissance.

Style: Neo-Renaissance, with a Rapolano stone façade, a central rose window, and a bell gable at the rear.

Interior: A single nave with blue starry vaults and stucco decorations; the semicircular apse once housed a statue of the Madonna attributed to Andrea della Robbia, now preserved in the center of San Quirico d'Orcia.

🌄 Location and Access
It is located along a dirt road between Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia.

Reachable only on foot, via two scenic paths through cypress trees and wheat fields.

The shorter route takes about 10 minutes, the other about half an hour.

✨ Curiosities and Legends
According to tradition, the Madonna appeared to a shepherdess, indicating where to find the statue to be placed in the chapel.

It is often mistakenly associated with the film Gladiator, but it doesn't appear in the film.

🍷 Experience to Live
Next to the chapel is the Ristoro Vitaleta, where you can enjoy local organic products with a breathtaking view.

Visiting at dawn or dusk offers a magical atmosphere, with the light caressing the stone and cypress trees.
